Officer and Director Descriptions
Here's a quick rundown on the duties of our council officers and directors:
GRAND KNIGHT
The Grand Knight is the most public face of the council. He conducts the business meetings, and he is usually the one that other organizations will contact when they want to deal with the council. The GK is expected to represent the council at state meetings.
DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT
The Deputy Grand Knight assists the GK in his duties. He substitutes for the GK in any official duty that the GK is unable to fulfill.
FINANCIAL SECRETARY
Not an elected office, but appointed by the Supreme Council. The FS is the council's primary bookkeeper. Any money given to or taken from the council should go through his hands, so he can record the transactions. He bills members and collects dues from them, and issues their membership cards.
CHANCELLOR
The Chancellor serves as an assistant to the GK and the DGK. In addition, he is expected to do what he can to foster members' interest in the council's programs.
RECORDER
The Recorder keeps the historical records of the council. In particular, he is responsible for recording the minutes of official council meetings.
TREASURER
The Treasurer maintains the council's bank accounts. The FS hands incoming monies off to the Treasurer for deposit, and the Treasurer disburses monies as directed by the FS. This is done to ensure that no one person has sole responsibility for the council's funds.
ADVOCATE
The Advocate should be involved in all of the council's legal dealings. He should also familiarize himself with the rules and procedures that govern KofC meetings.
WARDEN
The Warden is the "keeper of the stuff" and the chief guard. He is responsible for setting up the council's meeting area. The Warden, with the help of the Guards, checks to make sure those attending a KofC meeting have current membership cards. In Council 4312, the Warden is also responsible for setting up the refreshments for after the business meetings.
INSIDE GUARD, OUTSIDE GUARD(S)
The Guards assist the Warden. They guard the meeting chamber from non-qualified persons and assist in setup and teardown of the items used in a meeting.
TRUSTEES
Three Trustees are elected at staggered intervals, with usually only one position being elected at a time. The Trustees act as a further check on the FS and Treasurer, and they conduct the Semiannual Audit required by the Supreme Council, to make sure the council's books are being properly kept. In Council 4312, the Trustees also serve as a nominating committee, to provide candidates for office elections. They also serve as part of the Retention Committee, assisting the FS in making contact with members who have fallen behind on their dues.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR
The Program Director is not elected, but is appointed by the GK. The PD assists the GK in planning the council's activities for the Fraternal Year, then he and the Program Chairmen get it done. In many councils, the DGK is also the PD.
PROGRAM CHAIRMEN
Also not elected, but appointed by the GK. Each Program Chairman heads up a committee of member Knights who take charge of a particular aspect of the council's activities. The program sections are: Membership and Retention, Council, Family, Church, Community, Pro-Life, Youth and Vocations.
