Pancake Breakfast for Seminarians September 9

Mark Romer's picture

Please go to the calendar event for our pancake breakfast and sign up to help out. We are raising money for the seminarians in our diocese. We'll need people to cook the pancakes beforehand, set up, prepare the food, serve and clean up.

Patrick Hirtz had told us a couple of months ago that the diocese was setting up an emergency fund for the seminarians to use for things like traveling in the event of a death in the family. However, no one I talked to at The Catholic Center knew anything about such a fund. So, we're advertising this as being a general fundraiser for the seminarians.

Okay, We're Almost Ready

Thank you to the guys who have already indicated they will be helping. As always, we need more. Please let me know if you can help.

I was hoping we would be able to use the cafeteria kitchen on Saturday to pre-cook a bunch of pancakes. However, the diaconate class is going to be there throughout the day, so I don't know if we can do it before 5:00 PM without disturbing them. Any thoughts, anyone? I think we could actually do all the cooking on Sunday, but it would be nice to hedge our bets.

I ordered the sausage Wednesday, and it was supposed to have been delivered that night. Hopefully we'll be able to find it.

The following preparation still needs to be done:

  1. Inventory the relevant stuff in the Family Room closet.
  2. Prepare shopping list for Saturday.
  3. Purchase the pancake mix, syrup, butter, milk, OJ, etc. that we will need.
  4. Pre-cook however many pancakes we think we ought to do beforehand.
  5. Make signs.
  6. Round up cash for making change.

I think I'll be taking care of 1 and 2 tonight. I'll be cantoring the First Friday Mass, so I'll be up at the church anyway. I can take care of the other things, but I'll be more than happy to share the load, too.

Please post responses here or e-mail them to me and I'll post them. If you're registered on the web site, you can use the subscribe feature to be notified if any additions are made to this thread.

Signs Printed Up

I've done up some signs on the computer, and I'm going to get them laminated tomorrow.

Everything Is Ready, I Think

Okay. Everything but number 4 is done. We're just going to have to trust that everything will work out OK, like it always does. Thank you to those who have called me to tell me you'll be there tomorrow. I know that others will show up who haven't told me. Thank you for your help, too.

Tonight I tried out an idea I had had about using condiment squirt bottles to dispense the pancake batter. After trimming the tip to be big enough, it worked pretty well. However, the bottle just doesn't hold enough to make it practical for large numbers of cakes. I think we'll need to try using pitchers or ladles (I think pitchers will work better.).

Results of the Breakfast

I had to leave early after helping out with the crew, although I need to congratulate all that attend and work to make it successful.
Mark, the signs looked beautiful.

Thank You

Thank you. I think we're all going to like the results of today's effort. I'll be posting them up on the site as soon as I get a copy of the invoice from US Food Service.
